At the top of the famous 199 steps in Whitby stands the Caedmon cross. It is a tribute to the monk Caedmon who after receiving a celestial visitation was able to sing and recite in rhyming couplets. He is reputed to be responsible for songs of praise in the form of hymns and is also looked upon by some as the father of English poetry. This cross measures 30x17mm and is set with a 6mm cabochon.
