Ammonite with carved snakeshead

The ammonite Hildoceras is used here to illustrate the Whitby legend of St Hilda. She is reputed to have turned a plague of serpents into stone while clearing the ground for her abbey. She had removed their heads with a switch before tossing them over the cliff to be turned into stone. Here we have introduced a carved serpents head from Whitby Jet with amber eyes and fangs carved from mammoth ivory. Each one I carve will be completely unique.
