The legend of Saint Hilda states that Saint Hilda saved the Abbey from a plague of serpents by cutting off their heads and turning their bodies into stone. The Victorian craftsmen would carve a simple head on the fossil as if she had missed one! My homage to the legend is to drill and peg a piece of Whitby Jet, attach it to the ammonite and carve a more elaborate serpents head.
